Many beauty tips that we come across while surfing the Internet don’t have anything in common with the real body and hair care. They appear to be a huge mistake, yet somehow they are passed from one person to another as something obvious. These are little lies and myths that simply got imprinted into our outlook on the subject of beauty. We keep taking them for granted just like the fact that the sun rises in the east and goes down in the west. Thus, we don’t even think about questioning the common beliefs concerning beauty rituals. We get into a bathroom and reach for alcohol face toner because it’s said to be the best for oily and acne skin types but… Is it, really? It’s time to disprove all the false myths that harm our skin every day.

Common skin care myths

1. Toner with alcohol – perfect for oily skin

This is one of the biggest skin care paradoxes. It turns out that oily skin is oily because it lacks moisturisation. It’s dehydrated so it fights this problem back by producing sebum so as to rebuilt its hydrolipid coat. However, if you treat it with a toner with alcohol (you don’t like this uncontrolled shine so you want to dry it up a little bit to get rid of the sebum), the effect you achieve is contrary to what you expected. To clarify, skin starts producing sebum in excess. And so a vicious circle is formed. How to deal with that? It’d be best if you reached for, first of all, a natural oil (e.g. jojoba oil) and, second of all, you should reach for a light, day gel-cream that won’t overburden your skin nor intensifies sebum production but replenishes face skin with water.

2. Using a micellar lotion to remove makeup and cleanse skin suffices totally

It’s a serious mistake and one of the myths that disturb the proper functioning of our skin. In short, the effect is that the complexion will never be completely clean. Micellar lotion was misguidedly popularized as a 3-in-1 cosmetic that removes makeup, cleanses face and tones it. It turns out that this product isn’t as marvelous as most people expect it to be. Naturally, we can use it to take off makeup but after that we have to cleanse our face with the use of delicate cleansing foam or cleansing gel.

3. Face toner is an obsolete and unnecessary cosmetic

If you came across such conviction and you believed it, then you must realize that this is yet another skin care myth. Toner is a marvelous cosmetic, it’s like a deep breath for skin. Basically, toner soothes skin, clams it down, tones and maintains skin’s pH level. Bear in mind that it’s crucial to use a toner before applying a face cream. This product doesn’t only make skin ready to welcome the cream but also increases skin absorption rate. This in turn results in receiving more nourishing substances that the cream offers.

4. Gel, foam or soap are the best to wash skin with

Women living in the regions of Asia won’t agree with this conviction. For centuries they have been using oils to treat their face skin with. Also, in the terrains of Africa treating skin with oils is common, actually the natural substances replace soap. Fat, which is sebum, residues of oily cosmetics along with various types of toxins and bacteria, can be easily removed with other fat – in this case with a well-matched oil. It’s worth realising that oils don’t only cleanse skin and wash it, but also take care of skin, help it to regenerate, revitalize, heal and soothe. No wonder why cleansing face with oils has its own name, OCM, and became the most popular beauty treatment worldwide. You may consider OCM as the perfect alternative to your typical evening face skin routine.

5. Exercises are beneficial but only for a body

Well, that’s not true, actually. Do you know that there are approximately 40 muscles in your face that, when exercised properly, will help you enjoy beautiful, youthful looking and elastic skin? Exercising facial muscles regularly slows down wrinkle formation and helps lift up face skin. In fact, this should be recognized as an effective skin rejuvenating technique. Apart from ‘regular’ facial muscle exercises, you can start practicing facial yoga. The ones who take advantage of this method report noticing effects after 2 weeks of regular exercising.

6. Massage has to be done only to cellulite-affected, fatigued or sore skin

And this is another myth to demolish. Both types of massages, done to body as well as the one done to face and scalp have a highly beneficial action: they boost blood microcirculation and detoxify skin wonderfully. Thanks to this, toxins are released from cells and removed from our body. As a result, skin becomes supplied with oxygen, more supple, it’s able to absorb more nourishing substances as the very ingredients are able to penetrate its deeper and more effectively. Skin massage delivers rejuvenating action, stimulates its self-regenerating processes, slows down ageing processes and counteracts oxidative stress.
